Abstract: The increasing recognition that stunting and wasting are linked, and that wasting can increase the risk of subsequent stunting, has serious programmatic and policy implications, as highlighted by Jonathan Wells and colleagues in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health. Clearly, a shift in how child undernutrition is understood and managed is urgently needed if the World Health Assembly and the UN Sustainable Development Goal targets are to be met. A better understanding of the interaction between wasting and stunting is crucial, and the need to support children before they become undernourished cannot be overstated. Wells and colleagues briefly highlighted the need for more research on the biological processes of child bodyweight and linear growth faltering. They call for evaluations of routine and seasonal preventive interventions for children at risk of growth faltering. We aim to discuss at greater lengths the role of seasonality in growth faltering, which is an area that we think merits much greater attention. Read more.
