ESSP II Working Paper 23 "Foodgrain Consumption and Calorie Intake Patterns in Ethiopia" by Guush Berhane, Zelekawork Paulos, Kibrom Tafere, and Seneshaw Tamru.
Abstract: This paper presents an analysis of consumption patterns and intake of selected foodgrains across rural and urban locations, agroecological zones, and income groups. The research focuses on the six principal staples in the country: teff, wheat, maize, sorghum, barley, and enset—often called “False Banana.” A look at the nationally representative data used in this analysis shows that these major staples dominate the national food basket in Ethiopia, supplying more than 70 percent of calories.
