The National Information Platform for Nutrition (NIPN) organized a seminar on November 7, 2019 at the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) on "Reducing chronic undernutrition through nutrition sensitive social protection (SP): Evidence from Bangladesh, lessons for Ethiopia" which was presented by John Hoddinott of Cornell University.
Reducing undernutrition is of intrinsic and instrumental value. However, existing evidence indicates that nutrition-specific interventions have only limited impacts on reducing chronic undernutrition. Consequently, investments in nutrition-sensitive social protection and agriculture are needed. However, existing evidence from Ethiopia and elsewhere indicates that “just” providing cash or food has limited effects on chronic undernutrition. This presentation describes results from a nutrition-sensitive social protection intervention in Bangladesh that reduced chronic undernutrition and describes their relevance for Ethiopia.
