IFPRI-ESSP along with the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR), the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and Ethiopian Agricultural Research Council Secretariat organized a two day workshop on March 7 and 8, 2019 to discuss the main issues in the development of dryland areas for sustainable agricultural production in Ethiopia. The workshop's main purpose was to share experiences and thoughts and to discuss lessons that Ethiopia could be building on to develop the dryland areas of the country. Participants had the opportunity to examine opportunities and challenges of dryland areas.
The major objective of the workshop was to explore the use of available technologies and practices for production systems of crops, livestock, and trees and for overall natural resource management to develop the dryland areas of Ethiopia. This will in turn provide strategic options to policy makers and planners to develop dryland areas. Researchers from different institutions and centers presented their work on subjects ranging from land management, irrigation potential, agroforestry, livestock to climate change. ESSP's Alemayehu Seyoum Taffesse presented some policy issues in the development of the drylands of Ethiopia.
