On November 26-28, 2014, IFPRI in conjunction with ESSP, delivered impact evaluation training to over 35 participants who were committed to extend their knowledge and skills. This 3-day training workshop, held at the IRLI campus in Addis Ababa, had been organized as part of IFPRI’s “3iE research project” on the Productive Safety Net Programme (PSNP) and child outcomes in Ethiopia. Its aims were to explore ‘best practice’ in impact evaluation methods and techniques, and to improve the quality of impact evaluation research in Ethiopia.
The team of highly experienced trainers/researchers were skilled in both theoretical and practical techniques, including impact evaluation designs, sampling and econometric impact evaluation methods. Based on the excellent feedback from the participants, the training was not only described as quality training, but clearly helped deepen knowledge and understanding of the subject. From such positive feedback, where approximately 85% of participants confirmed that they felt that the training had achieved its objectives, the work of ESSP/IFPRI to effectively build capability in those who have, or will have, a responsibility for evaluating impact in their jobs or in their studies, is something certainly worth repeating in the future. And not to forget, a natural spill over is anticipated from the reuse of materials, whether this be in a formal or an informal setting – either way, an impact is likely to be felt over time.
