The 16th Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA) International Annual Conference, co-organized by IFPRI-ESSP, was held on 19-21 July, 2018 in Addis Ababa. The EEA represents a professional and independent body with a primary focus on advancing the economic environment in Ethiopia and promoting economic research among institutions across the country. The EEA plays an important and practical role in building capacity by engaging institutions and the government. It serves as a platform to help formulate industrial policy in Ethiopia now and into the future.
EEA’s membership stands at approximately 4500, and this year over the three days, about 1050 members and other local and international researchers, policy makers, and local and international development partners attended over twenty five sessions, covering wide-ranging topics, including the State of the Ethiopian economy, the Economics of livestock Systems, Climate change, launch of the Book on Economics of Teff, Agricultural Transformation as well as Land access and land rights. The conference began with the President Dr. Tadele Ferede giving a welcoming address which was followed by H.E Ato Demeke Mekonnen, Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia opening the conference. During the opening session the EEA also honoured IFPRI's Alemayehu Seyoum Taffesse for his considerable contribution and support to the advancement of the Ethiopian Economics Association. The Deputy Prime Minister, presented Alemayehu with a certificate of recognition and a gold pin.
During the afternoon plenary session, IFPRI-ESSP launched its long awaited book on the Economics of Teff with different presentations by chapter authors of the book. The presentations covered topics from dynamics of Teff, to the supply chain of Teff and the nutrient composition and health benefits of teff. You can download the book here and the synopsis here.
